Description
A colorless and transparent liquid with a special smell of aromatic hydrocarbons. It is a mixture composed of three isomers of 45%~70% meta-xylene, 15%~25% para-xylene and 10%~15% o-xylene. It is easy to flow and can be combined with anhydrous ethanol and ether. Xylene has a pungent odor and is flammable. It can be mixed with ethanol, chloroform or ether at will, and it is insoluble in water. It can be used as adhesives, for plastics, fuels, rubber, and various coatings.
Uses
It is widely used as a solvent in coatings, resins, dyes, inks and other industries; as a synthetic monomer or solvent in pharmaceuticals, explosives, pesticides and other industries; it can also be used as a high-octane gasoline component and is an important raw material for organic chemical industry. It can also be used to remove asphalt from vehicle surfaces. In hospital pathology departments, it is mainly used for clearing and dewaxing tissues and sections.
